Gaming has always been a popular free-time activity among children, as well as adults. This leisure activity started in the 1950s when a computerized simulation of tic-tac-toe was made in 1952. It was initially developed for the early stored-information computers. Later, in 1958, the game Tennis for Two was developed to entertain the working people. Video games since then have evolved from simple tools to communication media that can better explain human relationships and values

Arcade Gaming

In 1966 and 1967, the games Periscope and Crown Special were released by Sega and Taito. These were the mechanical games that arouse the interest in arcade gaming among people. Atari developed a new industry of arcade and in-house gaming. They were the first to sell an electronic video game called Pong.

Gaming consoles

The first-ever video gaming console was sold in 1972. In the late 1960s, Ralph Behr developed a prototype that was the basis of the console called Magnavox Odyssey. It included a game similar to the arcade game Pong.

Another big contribution to the evolution of gaming was the game cartridge which could store multiple games. This motivated the game console makers to become game producers because of the increasing demands for games. Among all the gaming cartridge-type consoles, one that stood out which was Atari’s 2600. It became successful because of the games like Pac-Man and Space Invaders.

Later in 1975, the first-ever home computer was sold. It was Altair.

Nintendo

Jumping to the rise of Nintendo, a Japanese novelty producer who started developing arcade games and electronic games like Donkey Kong in the 1980s. it began its success where Atari failed when it sold the famous arcade game Pac-Man as the home console game and it caused the crash of 1983. Nintendo used better and newer technology to overcome the failures of Atari.

In 1985, Nintendo introduced the Nintendo Entertainment System in the United States. A great success of Nintendo came along called The Super Mario Brothers which reflected the adventures of real-life and attracted children from a specific age targeted by Atari.

Electronic games since the 90s started evolving at a quicker pace when the game developers started the console wars. Sega challenged Nintendo with 16-bit systems. Sega started marketing for younger children and hence became a better version of Nintendo. Sega and Nintendo competed to increase the level of violence in their video games with the release of Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter.

Later in 1995, with the fear of an obsolete system, Sega launched the Saturn system of 32-bits with less number of games. During that time, Sony launched its Play Station which affected the market and the even older generation of 14 to 24-year-olds.
